This rite was developed and is used by Bishop J.W.Ghoren of Delaware.

  • Participants: Priest, Penitent, Both

Priest:

In the name of God,
the Father, the Man and the Holy Spirit,

Both: Amen.

Priest: How long has it been since you confessed your sins before God?

Penitent: _________________.

Priest: Do you wish to be compelled to truth before God?

Penitent: (May answer yes or no. If yes, the Liar's Plague is administered.)

Priest:

Through the mercy of God,
we have been granted reprieve from the Pit
and offered the chance to walk His Dark Path on earth.
How have you strayed from your path, brother/sister?

(The Penitent shares his or her sins, answering questions as asked by the Priest.)

Priest: Your sins are grave, for even the slightest deviation from our Holy Purpose is an affont to our Damnation in His Plan. Yet He is merciful, and the strength of the Blood is His gift to we who are by nature monstrous. Do you seek penance for your sins, Brother/Sister?

Penitent: Yes, Father/Mother, I do.

Priest: Then recite an Act of Damnation, laying bare your unworthiness before God and begging for a taste of His infinite mercy and guidance.

Penitent: (While the Priest mutters the prayer under his/her breath.)

O my God, I know that I stand damned in your eyes.
As Longinus himself was damned for piercing the side of your only son,
I too am damned for feasting upon the blood of your flock.
And yet, though I am cast aside, you have made a place for me in your plan.
Help me Lord, to be your servant, and perform your works in every action.

Priest: Let us pray,
Dear God, in the name of your Son,
Through the wisdom of his Dark Prophet, Longinus,
and in the tradition of the Dark Apostle, Monachus,
we pray to you tonight for forgiveness and guidance.
Spare us from temptations Lord, which might lead us from the Path You have set before us.
Help us to exemplify the Predators you have made us, Lord,
And forgive us the sins we commit in trying to best effect our Purpose for You.

Brother/Sister, for your sins I urge you to (Priest assigns penance - see below.)

Do you accept your penance,
recognize your imperfection before God,
and embrace rather than mourn the Damnation He has chosen you for?

Penitent: I do.

Priest: Then go forth, fulfill your penance and contemplate your Purpose.

In the Name of God the Father, the Man and the Holy Spirit.

Both: Amen.

[edit] Penance

What a priest assigns as penance can vary wildly depending on: the priest, the penitent, the nature of the sins, the degree of the crimes, and any effects the sins may have had on the Church. Aside from recitations of prayer and hours spent reading Scripture, penance can often take more corporeal forms, including lashes before the congregation, debasement of the penitent during Mass or tasks of penance set before the penitent. Rarely is penance an easy task, for prayers and Scripture - when truly read deeply, repeatedly and penitently - can be an overwhelming reminder of our inadequacy before God, and hardly the easy Penance they seem.
