[edit] History

The Order of Calicem Salutaris was established shortly after the reawakening of its founder, Siena Battaglia, who was once a Mother Superior of a small convent of Dominican Nuns in Sorrento, Italy. In 1347, when the Black Death came, she saw this as a sign from God that the world she knew was coming to an end, and a new world was emerging; a world where the church had little influence over man and his condition. It is believed she entered into twilight for a period of approximately 200 years.

She awoke sometime in 1560’s, just as the Council of Trent was convening. The purpose of the Council had been to answer all the contradictions of the Protestant movement. “Anathema Si”’ or “Let him be anathema” served as the backdrop for her spiritual re-awakening. She felt renewal, strength so great that it is believed it drove her to unfathomable zealousness found only in the saints and martyrs. She began to shut herself off to only those who could help her realize the path she was on. Many a night was spent speaking with other Elders about how they perceived the words of Longinus and how it fit into the new world around her. After spending decades of study, she came upon two very certain and distinct truths: One, that she was Damned. And, two, that while she still viewed the Lance through her Catholic eyes, it was possible that others who held different "mortal" religious beliefs, those monotheistic religions widely accepted, could in fact still follow the words and lessons of Longinus and therefore still following in God's Holy Plan.

With that in mind, she decided it was time to have one place, where there could be fellowship among the differing views. This place became known as Calicem Salutaris, or the Chalice of Salvation, for as their eternal motto reads, “Where there is the Word, there is no Hunger.”

The new “university/convent” opened its doors in 1592, in Sorrento, Italy. Instead of marking the beginning of a new era with separation and counter attacks as the Catholic Church had done, Calicem Salutaris began as a safe haven for the learned and a school for the unaware. Just as the Dominicans had the “Four Pillars of Dominican Life”, (community life, common prayer, study, and service) so too would the Calicem Salutaris have its own Pillars on which to build a great order. “To Preach the Word, to Unify the Body of the Lance, to Mentor the Unbelievers, and to Guide others in God’s Holy Plan” became the utmost goal for the new order. Many understood the basic tenets of the preaching order, and soon it began to flourish under Mother Battaglia direction.

Once established as a stable “order” and accepted by the Clergy and Leadership of the Lancea Sanctum, she traveled back to Sicily, to Palermo. It was there she found another place where kindred gathered. With the blessing of the Lance, she created another university/convent for the learned. The second “university/convent” was established in 1687. She remained in Palermo for about 100 years before she decided to head to the Americas and establish an American university/convent.

In 1789, Mother Battaglia landed in Wilmington, North Carolina. As soon as she arrived, she sought out assistance to acclimate herself to her new surroundings. Her first stop was north, to Baltimore, MD. There she received blessing from Lancea Elders to establish another university/convent in the south away from prying eyes.

The third university was erected on the outskirts of Charleston, South Carolina. However, this time, she decided to establish an orphanage, to assist in keeping the masquerade and gain more financial support. Once the orphanage was erected, the university gained much support from the good Christian families of the area. By the beginning of the American Civil War, the orphanage was running smoothly and the university was completely built and running. For the entire war, the “sisters” kept to their word and attend those in need; all the while, kindred from the area where also seeking sanctuary from the war at the convent.

There was a period of time, around the 1890’s, where the convent went through some troubles due in part to an unforeseen tragedy. However, the Order would continue to thrive as a whole. And, soon, the founder was headed back to Europe. While there, the many convents she established continued to flourish. Just before World War II, she returned to America for good.

Once back in America, the founder continued to have contact with other kindred of greater status, which also bolstered the reputation of the Order in the United States.

In 2006, the Reverend Mother and a few select members of her order headed to the West to assist a fellow Covenant and Order member in the San Francisco Bay Area. She selected Modesto, California as her new Western Base of Operations. The Order is currently establishing a Migrant Minitry through the Diocese of Stockton.
