[edit] About the Society

Self-appointed spiritual and political advisors with the ranks of the Lancea Sanctum, the priests and bishops that make up the shadowy Prélat Noire (the black prælatus) have made it their mission to impart the beliefs of the Sanctified upon the ranks of the Invictus. Consummate devotees of the Lancea Sanctum as the Second Estate, the Prélat Noire see a spiritual calling in acting as the chief counsel to the Damned of the First Estate and advise Princes, Barons, Dukes, and Earls as part of their nightly Requiem of guiding the Invictus. Although the Prélat Noire are members of the Sanctified they firmly believe that the Lancea should not rule the Courts of the Damned and insist that the burden of leadership belongs to the Invictus alone. As such, members of the Prélat Noire do not often ascend the ranks of the Sanctified to either Archbishop or Cardinal. This suits them fine, however, as their Requiem requires that they stand behind the throne and allow other Damned to stand as the Princes of the Night.

[edit] Tenets of the Society

Members of the Prélat Noire uphold three core beliuefs as the tenets of their society.

  • The Sanctified must not lead: The Prélat Noire believe, firts and foremost, that the Lancea Sanctum must ever be dedicated to their faith and to the Scriptures of Longinus. To rule the Damned is not to guide them. Indeed, if Longinus had meant for the Sanctified to lead he would have chosen an aristocrat or a king to hear his Words and wreite his Scriptures. In choosing the Monachus, a humble monk, as his first disciple and scribe the Dark Prophet intended for the Sanctified to act as the bearers of spiritual wisdom and not imperial patriarchs of will.
  • The First Estate must ever lead by the counsel of the Second Estate: The Invictus are the First Estate in the Requiem of the Damned. The very presence of a First Estate infers the presence of a Second Estate that follows them in the Hierarchy of the Night. The Prélat Noire see the relationship between these two courts as a sacred and sympathetic bond that reinforces the strength and purpose of both parties. The First Estate, says the Prélat Noire, forged themselves as the rulers of the Night and set themselves to task on shouldering the burdens of such a role. Indeed, the Invictus rely on the spiritual insight and wisdom of the Lancea Sanctum to ensure that they rule with a dark hand guided by the Dark Prophet. Prélat Noire advisors insist that to forfeit this diligence is to instead lead the Invictus into the temptations of the self-serving mystics of the Ordo Dracul or the heretical witches of the Crone. The counsel of deviant teachings and heretical practices from other Covenants does nothing, they insist, but lead the Invictus on a path of corruption and destruction or, even worse, a war between the First and Second Estate. As advisors to the throne, the Prélat Noire ensure that the eyes of the Prince will ever be on the true enemies of the Requiem.
  • We best serve the First Estate by remaining outside the Chain: The Invictus uses Blood Oaths and Fealty Chains to ensure the loyalty and strength of all those beneath the throne. However, as Sanctified, the Prélat Noire owe ultimate loyalty and faith to Dark Prophet Longinus as opposed to the Lords or Barons of the Invictus. For the shadow counselors their faith is that which ensures that their counsel to the Invictus is guided by spiritual wisdom rather than temporal power. But it also ensures that that Sanctified advisors will never be corrupted or led astray by a petty tyrant or dictator. Indeed, the Prélat Noire believe that by staying out of Chains of Fealty the First Estate can be assured of the Sanctified's unilateral support of the Invictus as a whole as opposed to a particular faction therein. Such a show of unity on the part of the Prélat Noire will also ensure that power struggles within the Invictus (when they occur) are brief and isolated to only the members of the First Estate.
