[edit] Quotes

"I am God's holy monster, sir....while that is not and will never be a valid excuse for ill manners or ineloquent speech, believe me when I say that it quite expressly prohibits me behaving myself."

"I will not go quietly. You can have your little delusion of conquering me...but I'm not dying for it."

"Being powerful is somewhat like being a gentleman - if you have to say that you are, then you probably aren't."

"You speak the word 'surrender'; your pardon, sir - that tongue is foreign to me, and I know it not."

"It is not the place of a Sanctified minister to speak of Heaven to his congregation - he has never seen it, and they never will."

"We can play this any way you want, boy, but bad things happen to little Invictus who forget who their friends are."

"Ugh, enough of your caterwauling - it grows tedious, I tell you! For one so quick to declare now the Winter of our discontent, you are remarkably ill-attired for the season."

[edit] Let Us Speak Now, Of Dangerous Things

“I’ve never cared for Gods and Goddesses. Their gifts don’t come free.”

“Nothing comes for free, girl. Still…there is one other you could talk to.”

“Man? Or woman?”

“Both, perhaps. Or neither.”

The Sandman - Endless Nights by Neil Gaiman

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, whenever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?"

- Thomas Dagget, The Prophecy

"You're handed this precious gift, right? Each one of you granted redemption from the Creator - murderers, rapists, molesters - all of you just have to repent, and God takes you into His bosom. In all the worlds and all the universe, no other creature can make such a boast, save man. It's not fair. If sweet, sweet God loves you so, then I will make you worthy of His love. I've been watching you for a long time...it's only in the face of horror that you truly find your noble self, and you can be so noble. So... I will bring you pain, I will bring you horror."

- Gabriel, Constantine

The ardour of red flame is thine,

And thine the steely soul of ice:

Thou poisonest the fair design

Of nature, with unfair device.

- The Dark Angel by Lionel Johnson

"No," said the cat. "Now, you people have names. That's because you don't know who you are. We know who we are, so we don't need names."

- Coraline by Neil Gaiman

[edit] Show Me Heaven

An occasional artist, sometime poet and frequent virtuoso, the Inquisitrix is a striking creature of ambiguous gender – there are some who have encountered him/her who would swear blind that he/she is a woman, and there are others who, after meeting him/her, are equally convinced he/she is man. The Inquisitrix him/herself is silent on the matter – when addressed as either, he/she makes no effort to clarify or correct (and indeed, seems to draw a certain chill amusement in playing to the confusion).

His/her eyes are hard and flat, betraying nothing, and he/she smiles only rarely, and in brief, dazzling flashes, like sunlight off the the edge of a knife.

The Inquisitrix speaks with a quiet intensity, the soft fire of utter conviction underlying every word. His/her voice is soft, low, very slightly sybillant and as ambiguous as his/her appearance - it has been described variously as silken, velvet, and/or honeyed. He/she is always polite and well-spoken, even when mercilessly tearing down some hapless transgressor, or perhaps even more so then; the stinging lash of his/her malefic eloquence is a humiliation that any unfortunate wretched enough to take the brunt of his/her impeccably articulated ire will not forget any time shortly thereafter.

He/she smells subtly but unmistakably of roses, and uses stationary for his/her correspondance that is impreganted with his/her scent. It also bears noting that a vague but continual and rather enticing smell of vitae lingers constantly about his/her person, prompting rumours that he/she is "leaking" slightly from unseen wounds.

By turns tender and charming or as sharp and cruel as broken glass, the Inquisitrix is beloved by many, lover of none. Always the possessor, never the possession...although, it is whispered, that a certain suave young Australian Incubus has recently sparked his/her interest, although whether this makes him to be envied or pitied is a subject of great debate.

Opinions differ as to the gender of the Inquisitrix (although those in doubt tend to default, for the sake of personal comfort, to the feminine conclusion - it seems the concept of androgynous women is less unsettling than that of androgynous men). What all his/her acquaintances do agree on, however, is that he/she is, in the longing words of Prince Guy’s fledgling childe, Elizabeth Hickey, “perfect and gracious and unutterably beautiful”.

[edit] The Story So Far

The Inquisitrix confuses as much by his/her behaviour as by his/her appearance, for he/she follows chivalric codes of etiquette when dealing with women – is often seen to kiss a lady’s hand upon first meeting, or as way of greeting thereafter, rise when a lady enters a room, to open doors, pull out chairs and to offer his/her arm to female companions – and yet, when he/she is offered the same treatment from gentleman acquaintances, always accepts wordlessly, though generally with obvious bemusement.

Very little is known about the Inquisitrix before his/her service in Perth – there are some who believe him/her to be the childe of either the late Inquisitor Jeffries or the late Bishop Christophe DuMole, aka the Tall Man, although this view is not widely held, and due to several circumstantial factors tends to fall apart upon close examination. What is known is that the Inquisitrix was once a Crusader in the Tall Man’s service, known only as the Sword, in a time when Perth’s Sanctified were many and powerful. He/she worked closely with Jeffries, in an efficient good cop/bad cop dynamic that made use of the contrast of his/her beauty and apparent gentleness against Jeffries' brutish manner - he/she was the carrot and he was the stick - serving the Tall Man faithfully and well, though it was plain whom he favoured.

For such a brief, sparkling moment, everything was perfect.

And then the deaths began.

The first to fall was the valiant Jeffries himself, to the claws of a diablerist Gangrel. And it was that night, or so the rumours go, that something very peculiar happened. At the moment of Jeffries death, many miles away, as the Tall Man fell to the floor of Elysium, howling with loss and rage as he felt the link that connected them shatter like glass, the Sword sagged, and then stiffened. His/her heart hardened, and his/her posture changed, and he/she raised his/her head and looked about the room with eyes that were flinty and cruel.

After that, he/she was different. He/she moved differently, spoke differently, thought differently, behaved differently. He/she became, very obviously, sleeker, faster, stronger, crueler, more charming and infinitely more ruthless.

And shortly after, the Tall Man Annointed him/her the Inquisitrix.

The rumours hold that something stole over the Sword that night, something that defies understanding – something that took up root in his/her body, and never left.

Shortly after Jeffries’ destruction, the novices began to go mad. One by one, they self-destructed. Eventually, all that was left of the once-thriving congregation was the Bishop himself, the Inquisitrix, the frequently absent Ezekial, who had been the Inquisitor Jeffries’ abecedarian, and an intemperate firebrand Priest named Francesco.

Though their numbers dwindled, still the Lancea Sanctum held great sway over Perth, the Tall Man’s political machinations burning through Prince after Prince after Prince.

Then came the night when the Tall Man was destroyed at the hands of his centuries-long arch-enemy, the Circle of the Crone Hierophant, the ancient called Guy. The Inquisitrix , who had stood with his/her Bishop as the Acolytes had borne down upon them only to be banished by his order when he needed him/her most (his final words to him/her were “Go! You alone will bear witness to my testament!”), did his/her best to keep the parish, which threatened to collapse completely, together. He/she appointed a talented newcomer named Lucian as the new Bishop.

The Inquisitrix was to regret that decision, for Lucian proved false, renouncing his Covenant for secular power when pressured by Guy, who had long since claimed Praxis. The Inquisitrix, enraged by his betrayal, campaigned passionately to have Lucian excommunicated from the Covenant; a campaign that was turned aside at an enclave of the Lancea Sanctum in His Grace, Bishop Julien’s domain of Melbourne to address the issue, where Lucian brought many slanderous allegations, including one of Infernalism, against him/her. The Inquisitrix wasn’t in attendance. The details of the meeting’s location and time had been kept from him/her.

At the request of Their Graces, Bishops Julien and Valeron Mayne, the Inquisitrix and Lucian retired to Perth, where no reconciliation was reached. The Inquisitrix stood ready to welcome the errant Priest back into the fold – Lucian preferred apostasy, choosing to associate with the renegade Carthian Salvatore Vitruvio and Randall, who had been co-sanguinus with Jeffries’ murderer.

They are currently seeking to slay him/her.

The Court of Perth was no longer a welcoming environment for the Lancea Sanctum, but the Inquisitrix and his/her two abecedarians, Ezekial and the newly arrived Jason Lassiter, a former charge of Inquisitor Matthew’s, of Sydney, stood firm (Francesco, tragically, fell to the temptations of the Infernal, and had to be dealt with). The Sanctified church may have been weak, but the Inquisitrix still commanded respect and fear within the Court of Perth, and he/she was clearly not giving any more ground without a fight.

A number of lower-profile Perth Acolytes had vanished without a trace - no-one had confronted the Inquisitrix yet, as such, but the accusation of foul play hung unspoken in the air at Elysium, and followed him/her about the Court. Perhaps the Inquisitrix was just waiting for Guy to make his move...

Guy then publically outlawed the Lancea Sanctum in his domain, exiling Jason and giving the Inquisitrix an ultimatum - renounce his/her faith and join another Covenant by the Governor's Ball in late September, or become a public enemy under lextalionis. And rumours circulated that the Inquisitrix couldn't be happier...he'd taken the bait, and was playing right into his/her hands.

The Inquisitrix recently took a tour with his/her companion, the Alder Lord Khovros, of the Eastern Australian Cities of Sydney and Melbourne, where he/she gained a reputation for his/her swaggering manner and cool charm. In their absence from Perth, a coup took place - a Praxis seizure by an up-and-coming young Invictus. Now the Court whispers that it was all too convenient that the Inquisitrix be out of the City during the potential danger of the usurpation, and that he/she had never made any secret of his/her belief that only the Invictus are fit to rule, as per the God-given order. Rumours circulate that the Inquisitrix was behind the coup, and has installed Eames as Prince with a view to puppetting him from the shadows. The Inquisitrix only smiles at such rumours; smiles...and says nothing.

On the 15th of September 2006 the Inquisitrix was anointed "Inquisitrix, High Bishop of Western Australia" by Jean-Baptiste Charles Cardinal de Béthune (consecrator) and Lady Kaatje van Dirae (co-consecrator).

The Inquisitrix has recently vanished in a storm of rumours and speculation, some say murdered by VII, some say taken by Abidan, and some say that he/she is just having a good damn cry over the death/torpor/uselessness of all his/her minions, and will resurface perfectly fine and only slightly the more emo for wear when he/she is damn good and ready.

Today I saw an angel... It was angry.
A mortal child about the Inquisitrix

"Threat, sire? From the Sanctified? How could there be, when we can't even tell if it's by a man or a woman that they're led?"
Overheard in Court, speaker unidentified

"The Inquisitrix did a superb job of being scarce all evening. One would suspect she was avoiding me on purpose. Can't imagine why..."
Cody Johnston, Childe of Alexander Page, Sheriff of Melbourne

"Sanctified Analysis Matrix 01. Subject: The Inquisitrix, The Sister as I prefer to call her. The Sister is a Kindred of some distinct age. She clearly operates on a time period of an elder, though confirmation of this fact has not proven apparent. She is most likely the highest ranking surviving Covenant member in the city. She claims to herald from the Mekhet, which, going by her talent for secrecy is likely. Her strength stems from the fear she inspires. Her weakness lies in her prone-ness to rages and control episodes. Diagnosis: Malignant Narcissism with Schizoid sub traits. Personal threat level: Ortis. Low for a powerful Sanctified. Covenant threat level: Teria. Elevated due to good reason for Acolyte animosity. Also her subversion of the Prince's Childe indicates ill intent. She is indeed one of the most interesting specimens in the city. My paper is duly listed under PIA A - Sanctified Inquisitrix. Access is Restricted."
Dr. Leto Vale, Acolyte cure of the Blood Disease, Perth.

OOC:Come on, I was on the verge of frenzy at the time because Jeffries had just been axed! That's not a prone-ness, I...oh, forget it. Yeah, fair enough. I was pretty pissed.>.<

"The Inquisitrix is the steady rock in an ocean of turmoil, quiet to the point of traquility. Her authority is unquestioned in her domain and she carries out her duties with the firm hand and iron determination of a true warrior of Longinus. I have personally had the honour of having the Inquisitrix on my staff when I was Prince of Perth and have served alongside her as a member of the Court. True in her service to her Covenant and unswerving in her loyalty, I would be proud to have a member of my Covenant as dedicated and compassionate as her."
Journeyman Adept, Cesaire Badau of Hunger Untamed, Former Prince of Perth, Elder of the Perth (City Status 4).

"The Inquisitrix is a solid leader for our Church, small as it is, with faith, nobility, good judgment, and peace in spades. In my relatively short time in this city, he has taken me in, sheltered me and taught me, and even gone so far as to call me his foster childe. His charity is matched only by his faith in the Testament and his dedication to our Mission, set down for us by Longinus all that time ago."
Jason Lassiter, Sanctified Abecadarian.

"Such a charming individual. Entirely more reasonable than Lucian, amusing though he is. One would be quite the fool to overlook such an person, and not simply due to the enmity of our allegiance" Ysabella de la Villere former Acolyte of Perth, now deceased.

"My my... such a interesting change to when I first met her all those centuries ago..."
A musing of Cardinal Prince Valeron Mayne Belotto, Cardinal of Canberra

OOC:Heh. Wanna talk about changes; at least I can program an electronic alarm system.^_-

"The Inquisitrix...well, my first encounter with 'her' I ended up insulting her, and fearing for my life. She is however a very patient Kindred. Her fury, though... Let's just say I wouldn't want to be a Crone in Perth for much longer. I'm surprised she hasn't killed them all yet."
Leonard Bromley, Proselyte

"In his eyes, heaven and hell reflected; Blood on his hands, blood on his sword Fire in his eyes and silk in his voice The deeds of a monster, the heart of a saint - Let us never forget that when it comes to angels Some may choose to fall, but others are pushed."
Anonymous

OOC: This is fantastic! Could whomever wrote this please come back and leave their PC's name? I'd love to know whom this is by.

"You are of a far greater value to our cause as an active leader than as a deceased symbol."
Cardinal de Béthune of the Low Countries

"My heart has broken several times since last I saw Ravel... There are times when I find my heart has caught the scent of the rose, and my mind has drifted to her beauty. But dust and wind are all I am left with. Dust and wind are all that I have." Aidan Callaghan

"When dealing with Lancea Sanctum, keep in mind there's two factions, and only one you can trust. There's the diplomats and charmers, and then there's the raving loonies. Now, the raving loonies really aren't so bad, because they'll screech to you about fire and brimstone, get all up in your face and just generally try to cram their beliefs down your throat without so much as a with your leave or a by your leave. And you might think that sounds just plain awful, but you'd be wrong, and I'll tell you why. (1) These guys can be relied upon to be completely fuckin' batty, 24/7, and you can work with that; they're predictable (2) They're generally not much of a threat politically, what with them being too busy burning the witches and all, plus it's fuckin' rare that a single one of these spangheads is halfway near compus mentus enough to have a handle on even basic politics (3) When one of them decides he's got it in for you, you can see the bastard coming a mile off. And those are the ones you can trust. But in the other camp, you got the smart ones. The pretty ones. The ones who've got it sussed, own the city, own the court and most likely own your worthless ass...all without you knowing. This lot's the smiling assassins, the ones you gotta watch out for. And you wanna know who's riding dinkey at the head of this shitparade of conniving, manipulative bastards? The goddamn Inquisitrix. Creep'll slip an arm around your shoulders just to score a better shot at your back. What's more, you'll never even know you've been stabbed til like, six months down the line. And it gets worse. Freak needs to choose a sex. Any sex. I don't care, just fuckin' PICK ONE! Jeebus, what the Hell is up with that shit? And that's the fuckin' heart's blood truth, man." - Anonymous, Carthian

OOC: Wow, Anonymous, that was some nice ranting. I'm almost flattered to have been the subject of such an exhaustive and colourful rant. I don't suppose you ever played oWoD Brujah, did you? If not, you'd have loved them. Oh, yeah, and secondly...why are all the coolest comments left anonymously?! Grrrr.

Nothing this evil, should radiate the beauty of the Heavenly Host
Nothing this unwholesome, should be so picture perfect
God had no hand in her Creation for she is the Devil's own Design
Dr. Tanis Cassian (Deceased)

Fellow Sanctified,

Let it be known that the one known as "the Inquisitrix", was anointed on the 15th of September 2006 (Anno Domini), as "Inquisitrix, High Bishop of Western Australia", by myself Jean-Baptiste Charles Cardinal de Béthune (as consecrator) and Lady Kaatje van Dirae (as co-consecrator).

It was an honor to be the consecrator of such a distinguished Sanctified. May the Faith and Vision that has guided this new Bishop to this role, remain a strong and unceasing guide to others during the following centuries of the Western-Australian diocese.

Jean-Baptiste Charles Cardinal de Béthune of the Low Countries

"I saw... I saw the face of an angel... it was both parts in perfect balance, both male and female, dreadful and beautiful... Your Grace... Sister, it looked like you..."

- Dr Isobel Harker, spoken to the Inquisitrix in the throes of religious ecstacy

"That...creature terrifies me. Its sheer, unswerving determination...its palpable ambition...it's a force of nature. I am not going anywhere near Perth, ever again, as long as the Inquisitrix is there." - Anonymous

"The Inquisitrix...beautiful, some say terrible. I say otherwise, I say he is gentle, considerate, yet always aloof. What wouldn't I give to see the sudden dazzling flash of his smile, to know it is purely for me. I dread the day I might fail in something he has asked of me. I don't know what I'd do if that ever happened. Tommy doesn't understand why I feel like this, he doesn't understand that to hear that soft voice call my name and say I have done well is the most beautiful sound in the world....." - Caterina Moretti, Ghoul

"The Inquisitrix is everything a Kindred should be. Beautiful and deadly, an untamed creature held in check only by the powerful mind that leashes the Beast within - and yet, perfectly balanced and in control of both mind and body. I've been told she's a deadly manipulator, and I am her victim. I've been told he's brutal and pitiless. All I know is that she has no need to manipulate me. I would rather carry the Inquisitrix's wounds than anyone else's kisses - and still I have no fear that he would ever give them. He makes me feel as though I were something pure and shining and precious, and when danger threatens, his first thought is of my safety. There is nothing she could take from me that is not already hers." - Elizabeth Pierdomenico

"You may get a shock, or a mouthful of cock, but it'll be wooooooorth it!" - Arthur Chrandle, Nosferatu Unbound, Melbourne

"There are very few of the Lancea Sanctum who have my respect or my sword. Her Excellency is one of those few that have begun to welcome me back." - Lawrence Friendly Paladin of Perth

"I'd hit it." - Miss Gabrielle Morgan, Invictus

(After a long, stunned silence and grim contemplation.) "You know, they say that, in every great epic, when the hero and villain face for the first time, they see a glimpse of one another reflected back. Old while I am young, Sanctified while I am Acolyte, we have both defied society's narrow limitations of gender and, if I am hearing you correctly, have both endeavored to great lengths and numerous saucy deeds to further our patron covenants. Would I embrace this one as my fellow, my friend, my sibling? Oh yessss...if I did not anticipate having to battle this one some day...? Yesss. I wonder if this is another Galloi? And how did we lose The Inquisitrix to those butchers?" Robin Ripley, overheard at The 2006 Winter Solstice after being told of The Inquisitrix.

"Sire is.....an interesting individual. It is the light that fends away the darkness, but calls the darkness back in place of the light. If you anger this creature, know that you will despair like never before." Skylar, Childe of The Inquisitrix

"Icequeen that what she is and that how I know she a chick, but then again she got some brass ones" Redmond Skeffington

"We have so few true opponents left, and given that her safety would be compromised if the truth was ever revealed we must continue the charade that has begun. Hopefully in the next centuary when she awakes the Sister can and will be someone to pit our wills against" The Consensus Peregren ap Laird, reflections to himself.

"His Grace is...she is such an overpowering presence, even sitting to one side just...watching. He is one of very few people who has ever made me feel so aware of myself while at the same time I felt like the faintest shadow on the wall next to her. I dearly hope I shall meet him again, and yet at the same time that makes me afraid. Whether it is the meeting or the hope of it that scares me, I don't know." Karly Finch, Mekhet Acolyte neonate, Melbourne

"And the darkness shineth in light; and the Light comprehended it not. That's how I always saw Ravel... sorry, the Inquisitrix as you know It. It shone with a pure, holy darkness, a predatory thing amidst vampiric sheep. She was good to me though. Taught a wayward kid how to be something more than just a mouthy little shit. I mean, fuck. The Dogs always harp on about power, but Ravel WAS power, and I ain't ever gonna forget that It touched me. You'd do well to meet It." - Discord, Gangrel Nomad

<Danielle_Thorgrimson> What is your most intense, poignant memory since you've become Kindred??

<Discord> Meeting It. The Darkness that shineth within the light, the cruel mirror of all our sins, the horror and wonder that is Its Grace, Ravel, called the Inquisitrix, High Bishop of West Australia.

  • The Inquisitrix reserves a special disdain for those elder Kindred who claim membership in the Carthian Movement - with a few notable exceptions

OOC: The Hell? Who WRITES this stuff?! ;-P

  • His/her famous, and some say near-compulsive, penchant for chutzpah, line-crossing and envelope-pushing is the behaviour of an elder unravelling - judgement clouded by thickened blood, and eager for any thrill that might ease the tedium of a world grown all too familiar, or perhaps end it entirely

  • The Inquisitrix holds no conviction which may not bought from him/her for the right price, and keeps to no principle that will stand unswayed and unbowed in the winds of opportunity, save, perhaps, his/her Faith itself.
  • All the Inquisitrix really wants, deep down, is to be loved...and world domination.
  • The Inquisitrix has circumvented for him/herself the problems faced by his/her contemporaries in the use of cellular phones by being the only elder in Perth with Bluetooth.
  • The Inquisitrix has that most rare and unsettling of qualities in Kindred of advanced years...a sense of humour.
  • The Inquisitrix doesn't 'do' sex, but has been known to show lovers the time of their un/lives who have piqued his/her interest.
  • The Inquisitrix collects bloodhunts on his/her head like other people make friends.
  • The Inquisitrix is the sire of Jamari Daquitaine, an androgynous Daeva of the Texan Sanctified.
  • The Inquisitrix was the frontal assault of a strikeforce to take out the mad elder Jacqueline, on the grounds of Araluen Botanical Park - they succeeded, to eventful consequence
  • The Inquisitrix has fallen into a listless melancholy of Byronian proportions following the death of the Invictus Knight Araquiel, who may (depending on who you listen to) have been his/her brother, cousin, comrade or lover, and has totally lost interest in everything, refusing even to hunt
  • The Inquisitrix is actually a Vitelion Daeva, and the childe and lover of Fenris Black.
  • Was once hissed at by a certain influential female Daeva, "I hate you." Simply smiled, blew smoke in her face, and laughed, "As long as you remember me."
  • With the reversion of her servant, Christopher Chorde, to his old ways, it is clear that the Holy Terror of the Lancea et Sanctum has risen again. Flee, foolish Kindred, lest ye be devoured by its unholy magnificence.

Potential Childer: The Inquisitrix exclusively embraces beautiful androgynes. If you're considering playing a pretty, androgynous concept, and you're looking for a sire, drop me a line: the_inquisitrix@yahoo.com.au (Clan revealed on application).
